My Ancestors in 1700

This page will summarize what is known about may ancestors near 1700. It will be organized in 16 sections, one for the ancestors of each of my gg-grandparents.

Ancestors of Benjamin Stephen MARTIN (1843-1899)

Benjamin's gg-grandparents were Johann Jost MERTEN, born 24 May 1691 in Müsen, Nassau-Siegen, Germany, died 1758 in Germantown, Fauquier County, VA and Maria Katherina OTTERBACH, born 5 Nov 1699 in Trupbach, Siegen-Wittgenstein, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, died 1780 Prince William County, VA. Johann and Maria both immigrated in 1714, and were in the Germanna Colony, Virginia. Johann was known as John Joseph MARTIN in America.

In 1700 Johann was 9 years old, in Müsen, a small mining village near Siegen, in western Germany. He was the 3rd of 4 children born to Hans Jacob MERTEN (23 Sep 1660 - 26 Aug 1693) and Anna Barbara WURMBACH (21 May 1667 - 10 Mar 1741). Johann was 2 years old when his father died. His mother remarried, and had 9 more children.

Maria had her 1st birthday on 5 Nov 1700. She was the 7th of 9 children of Hermann Johann OTTERBACH (1663-1719) and Elspeth HEIMBACH (1662-1718). They lived in Trupbach, a village closer to Siegen, 10 km south of Müsen. Johannes was a Fuhrmann, or one who transported goods. Basically, a 17th Century truck driver. This family also immigrated in 1714, and were part of the Germanna Colony.

The walled city of Siegen (pronounced zee-gen) was devastated by a great fire, from 10 to 20 Apr 1695. This must have had a great effect on the outlying communities, like Trupbach and Seelbach. The OTTERBACH family at the time was Johannes (31), Elisabeth (33), Anna (9), Elisabeth (6), John Phillip (3), and Johannes (almost 2). Grandfather Johannes (73) died a year later, and grandmother Anna (67) died 3 years later.
