Joseph BOYNTON was born about 1644-5 in Rowley, Massachusetts Bay Colony, son of John BOYNTON and Eleanor PELL.

His gravestone in Rowley Burial Ground gives his death on 16 Dec 1730, aged about 8S years (the S could be an 8 or 5.) He was born about 1844 [BF, p. 46] or about 1845 [GBB, p. 26]. At any rate, he was born in Rowley, as his father had settled there by 1643. This was early in the history of Rowley, founded in 1639. More information appears on my Essex County, MA page.

Joseph married (1) on 13 May, 1669 to Sarah SWAN, daughter of Richard SWAN and Anna SPOFFORD. Sarah SWAN was born about 1646 in Rowley, and died 27 Feb 1717/18 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. He was about 25 and she was 23 when they were married.

Joseph and Sarah had 10 children, in Rowley. They removed to Groton in 1715. With their son Benoni and his wife, Ann, they were dismissed from Rowley Church to Groton, on 4 Dec 1715. After she died in 1718, he returned to Rowley before 1720.

After Sarah died, Joseph married (2) on 11 Mar 1719/20 in Rowley, to Elizabeth WOOD, born about 1664 in MA. He was about 75 and she about 55.

Joseph was a Captain in Col. Francis WAINWRIGHT's First Regiment—Red—in service 1706 and 1707, Port Royal Expedition, in Queen Anne's War. He would have been over 62, an old soldier! He was also town clerk, and a leading citizen in Rowley.

Descendants

Joseph and Sarah had 10 children in Rowley, of which 8 survived to adulthood. Brothers Benoni and Hilkiah removed to Lunenburg, Worcester County, MA, and the rest stayed in Essex County.

1. Dea. Joseph BOYNTON Jr was born 23 Mar 1669/70 in Rowley, and died 25 Nov 1755 in Rowley, age 85. He married on 30 Jan 1693 in Rowley, to Bridget HARRIS, born 26 Nov 1672 in Rowley, died 14 Oct 1757, age 84.

Joseph was deacon of Rowley Church from 1723 until his death in 1755. [GBB, p. 28] By occupation he was a wheelwright. [BF, p. 50] He "was one of the lay members of the council of Salem village church to settle the differences in the church that grew out of the witchcraft trials." [AA, Vol. XI, p. 132]

Bridget was the daughter of Nathaniel HARRIS and Elizabeth HAZEN, of Rowley. [GBB, p. 138] Joseph and Bridget had 10 children, and lived all their lives in Rowley.

Nathaniel BOYNTON (1694 - 1755) was one of the original 17 members of the first church, founded 15 Nov 1727, in in Westford, Middlesex, MA.

2. Sarah BOYNTON was born 11 Jan 1671/72 in Rowley, and died 3 Apr 1709 in Bradford, Essex, MA, age 37. She married, as his 2nd wife, Dea. Samuel TENNEY, born 20 Nov 1667 in Bradford, Essex, MA, died 3 Feb 1747 in Bradford, Essex, MA, age 79.

Samuel TENNEY was married 3 times, and lived in Bradford, where he was a church deacon. Three of his sons and one son-in-law were also deacons in the church.

More specifically, Sarah and Samuel were both born in Rowley. Recall that John BOYNTON's home was on Bradford Street. This is probably the part of Rowley that became the town of Bradford in 1672. Then in 1850 the eastern part of Bradford became the town of Groveland. The remaining western part of Bradford was annexed to Haverhill in 1897.

He married (1) in 1689 to Abigail BAILEY, daughter of Dea. Joseph BAILEY and Abigail TRUMBULL. Abigail was born 9 Mar 1672 in Bradford, so she was only 16 or 17 when married, and Samuel was 21. Their child, Abigail TENNEY, was born 2 days after Samuel's 22nd birthday, on 22 Nov 1689 in Bradford, and the mother died 6 days later, on 28 Nov 1689 in Bradford, leaving Samuel as a widower with a baby, at age 22.

He married (2) on 18 Dec 1690, to Sarah BOYNTON. Samuel was then 23 and Sarah was 18. They had 11 children in Bradford. Sarah died on 3 Apr 1709, leaving Samuel and his 12 children, ranging in age from 2 to 19.

He married (3) in Newbury, 26 Jan 1709/10, to Hannah MOODY, born 4 Jan 1669 in Newbury, and died 29 Oct 1745.Samuel was 42 and Hannah was 41. I don't know of any children from this union, but presumably, Hannah helped raise Samuel's children.

3. Ann D. BOYNTON was born 14 Aug 1673 in Rowley, and died 04 Jul 1737 in MA, age 63. She does not seem to have married or had children.

4. Sergt. Richard BOYNTON was born 11 Nov 1675 in Rowley, and died 25 Dec 1732 in Rowley, age 57. He married on 24 Dec 1701 in Rowley, to Sarah DRESSER, born 4 Apr 1678 in Rowley, died 26 Apr 1759, age 81.

Sarah was the daughter of Lieut. John DRESSER and Martha THORLA, of Rowley.

Richard and Sarah lived in Rowley all their lives, and had 7 known children.

If these dates are correct, Love HUTCHINS was 14 or 15 when she married David BOYNTON, age 23. They had 3 children in Rowley or Bradford, and it seems that all 3 died in early childhood. David died at age 31, and Love remarried, on 25 May 1737, in Newbury, Essex, MA, to Bartholomew PEARSON of Newbury. [GBB, p. 31]

Lieut. Nathan BOYNTON married Hannah TODD, daughter of James TODD and Mary HOPKINSON, of Rowley. They lived in Rowley and had 4 children. Their eldest was James BOYNTON, born 5 Aug 1739, married on 14 June, 1763, to Mary WOOD of Boxford, where they settled. James was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, killed at Bunker Hill. [GBB, p. 31]

Richard BOYNTON Jr married Jerusha HUTCHINS, daughter of John HUTCHINS of Bradford. They had 4 children in Rowley, then removed to Tewksbury, Middlesex, MA in 1741, and had 4 more children. [GBB, p. 32]

Nathaniel BOYNTON married Mary STEWART, daughter of Edward STEWART. They lived in Rowley, and had 12 children. Nathaniel and 6 others were lost by shipwreck near Annis Squam Bar, Gloucester. [GBB, p. 32]

5. John BOYNTON was born 9 Apr 1678 in Rowley, and died 08 Oct 1718 in Rowley, age 46. He married on 17 Apr 1707 in Rowley, to Bethiah PLATTS, born 15 Mar 1689 in Rowley, died 12 Jun 1767 in Rowley, age 78.

John and Bethiah lived in Rowley all their lives, and had 6 children that are known, with 4 living to adulthood. John was a weaver.

Bethiah was the daughter of Samuel PLATTS and Mary LAW, of Rowley. Samuel was town clerk in Rowley for many years, and drew most of the deeds and wills in the years before his death on 24 Mar 1725/26. Bethiah only had one sibling, who died in infancy. Mary (LAW) PLATTS outlived her husband and both children and died 3 Jun 1726, less than 3 months after Samuel. [GBB, p. 308]

After John BOYNTON's death, Bethiah married Capt. John NORTHEND, also of Rowley. He was captain of Rowley Military Company. They had 3 more children, in Rowley. [GBB, p. 29, 257]

Capt. John NORTHEND only married once, to Bethiah, widow of John BOYNTON, and mother of Mary BOYNTON, who married Samuel NORTHEND, nephew of Capt. John NORTHEND. It was a small community!

A niece of Capt. John NORTHEND was Elizabeth NORTHEND, who married Jacob JEWETT, son-in-law of John BOYNTON.

6. Jonathan BOYNTON was born 25 Feb 1679 in Rowley, and died in childhood. His parents reused the name when another son was born on 19 Aug 1684, so the first Jonathan did not live past age 5.

7. Benoni BOYNTON was born 25 Feb 1681/82 in Rowley, and died 30 Dec 1758 in Lunenburg, Worcester, MA, age 76. He married on 4 Apr 1706 in MA, to Ann MIGHILL, born 8 Mar 1685 in Rowley, died 31 May 1764 in Lunenburg, Worcester, MA, age 79.

Ann MIGHILL was the daughter of Stephen MIGHILL and Sarah PHILLIPS, of Rowley.

Benoni and Ann had 12 children. The first 4 were born in Rowley, the next 6 in Groton, and the last 2 in Lunenburg. So they removed from Rowley to Groton in 1715, and then to Lunenburg in 1726.

In 1725 Benoni was a soldier in Capt. LOVEWELL's Company, at the Battle of Pequawket.
