56X BUICK SEP 29 2015
Al Batts again has added to our restoration photos with these ten photographs.
Photos 1 & 2 are of the painted instrument panel showing the two blue color paints that VP Bill Mitchell had mixed for his special 56X car. All of these photos represent the work of Bob Boorsma and our painters Art and Connie.
Photo 3 shows the back of the instrument panel. This assembly is ready for installation after Bob restored each component.
Photos 4 & 5 are of some of the painted roof iron sections of the convertible roof. Again another color blue special mix.
Photos 6 & 7 show the special chassis with one set on legs on the right side and one backside with legs on the left side. The operation on the underside by Del and Chuck are making the final hook ups on the special engine transmission.
We were told at the Buick Gallery that VP Bill Mitchell always put special engines in the special cars he built and this is the engine that a retired Stylist working directly for Bill Mitchell said he would have used.
This same engine can be found in three Buick concept cars one in each of 1954, one on 1955 and one in 1956 plus VP Bill Mitchells car the 1956X Century that is photographed here.
Photos 8 & 9 shows Ron Elzinga running the lathe to machine the stainless rivets for assembling the roof irons, side pieces, and all other pieces for the convertible roof. Jerry Bush did the instructing on the lathe operation.
Photo 10 shows Dick Saddler working on the left or driver's seat. In addition working on these special seats were Ken Tuinstra, Don Mayton, and Jim Baker.
