Subject: 56X BUICK SESSION APRIL 23 2013
VOLUNTEERS: Jim Baker, Al Batts, Bob Boorsma, Jerry Bush, Del Carpenter, Dick Chambers, Connie DeJong, Ron Elzinga, Don Feutz, Don Mayton, Art Meidema, Dick Saddler.
VISITORS: We had several sets of visitors but I did not keep up with names. Sorry.
Photos #1 & #2. The hands holding the small upholstery nails are Don M. while Connie does the soldering. This is interior trim that has to be chrome plated and we had to attach new nails to go through the upholstery prior to both preparing the parts for plating as well as the chrome plating job itself.
Previously Chuck Snow made some interior trim out of cut to size steel. Today Don M. and Connie constructed a jig to drill shallow holes in the back side of these trim pieces. Then threaded #8 machine screws were soldered into the back side of these trim pieces for attachment purposes.
Photos #3 & #4 shows Don Feutz's hands as he prepares the tail light castings for chrome plating. Although these castings had no damage over the years they developed pocketing that if chrome plated would look like the parts had chicken pox.
Photos #5 & #6 show the top material found in the convertible boot. This is a blue vinyl that was part of the top material. Jerry Bush who is in charge of the work on the top, the lifting mechanism, and all the hydraulics and electrics to make the top work cut out a blue vinyl section. He next had Al take a photograph of this top material next to the lighter of the two tone blue colors. A perfect match.
Photo #7. That is Jim Baker underneath the left side. He has now bolted the left or driver's seat in its final position and it is now attached to the floor pan.
Ron Elzinga and Dick Chambers have been attaching the aluminum rocker for both sides onto the body of the car. They have discovered that the contour of the aluminum rocker does not quite match the car body. We have contacted Ryan DeVries as he constructed the new rockers using the original as a pattern. He will be coming out at our next work session to do the measuring so that he can match the contours.
Art and Connie did some small part painting.
Del completed the assembly of the head light buckets and they are ready to mount on the front fenders. He also performed other maintenance in
the shop.
Bob has again found more parts in the barn for the electrical system of the instrument panel as well as the rest of the car. He has cleaned up the original antenna to see what parts need replaced.
1929-55X Buick Restoration: One trim piece on the '29 Buick has come up missing. It is one finger for the glass wing vent window. If we cannot locate it I will have to pick up one at the AACA Hershey event in October.
Thursday, with Del's help we fired up the '29 and drove it into the trailer. The rain had just stopped so the car did not get wet. As we headed to the upholstery shop it started raining again. When we arrived at the upholstery shop the rain stopped and again we drove the car from the inside of closed trailer into the shop. Brian will now continue his work of ompleting the inside and then the top material as we had installed the top mechanism while he was vacationing in Florida with family.
