Carpinus betulus
In olden times and even now fences made with a mix of Hornbeam, hawthorn and rosehip woods are used to keep the free-range cattle together. The name Hornbeam comes from "tree" and "horn" and it refers to the hardness of its wood, that makes it similar to a horn.
A curious myth links this plant with the city of Carpi, in the province of Modena. It tells when Aistulf, king of the Lombards, lost his falcon in the dense forest. He was desperately looking for it for many days, until one day he saw his falcon on a branch of a Hornbeam. The king made a vow, he wanted to honour this beautiful event by building the city of Carpi.
