Title: Keys

Size: 7x8 inches

The subject of this drawing was a piano with no black keys. I created a section of piano keys and my idea was to make it look like there were holes where the black keys were meant to be. This piece was inspired by a prompt and has no deep connection to my life. I chose this prompt over another prompt involving monsters and ice cream, or it might have been a spaceship, due to the fact that my art is usually less fantastical in subject matter.

I created this using charcoal on toned paper. I used compressed charcoal and charcoal sticks to create varying values of black. I used white conte to blend to create lighter grays and the white highlights. I used blue pastel paper for this piece.

I used value and contrast to create the piano keys. I have varying shades of white to gray to black and I tried to use contrast to show depth on the keys. I was originally thinking of using more perspective but I decided to go for a front on look of the keys. My next steps with this project would be to try and get my black values darker.
