self portrait

For this drawing I created a self portrait using graphite and colored pencils. I used a variety of graphite hardnesses and about three shades of blue pencils on my eye and hat. I also used a grid. I used value to create the dark and light shadows and highlights on my face.

The drawing had a relatively soft focus mostly because from the print out and the actual picture the photo was expanded, which led to it looking slightly blurry. My project changed a lot in ideas but once I was actually drawing it stayed consistent. I had originally wanted to do a collage of different angles of my face, then I wanted to do a color self portrait, and finally I settled on doing selective color on this photo.

The original photo for this drawing was taken on my stairs holding a headlamp to get shadows and highlights. I chose this photo after rejecting two other photo ideas. This was my first time attempting selective color and I think I will remember it for doing so. Something I might revise would be my grid lines: They are still very visible. I would change this by doing the lines lighter next time I use a grid.
