one earth design

This project was meant to be a commentary of the effects or causes of human driven climate change. I created a united states outline and added some cars, factories, oil rigs, and pipes around it. I did this on scratchboard which was the first time I have used scratchboard for a while. I used line primarily because this was a project created using only outlines. There were only two values used so this project didn’t use value too heavily, but there was some.

This project didn’t use really any composition techniques. The items were arranged by space rather than where they would satisfy compositional rules. This project did see evolution however. I was originally going to scratch the entire area around the U.S. white and scratch wind patterns over the U.S. but I ended up doing pipes in the background and not scratching the wind patterns on.

This project was meant to represent climate change on a global scale but I think this could have been more explicit in my artwork. It is slightly difficult to realize that my artwork is representing climate change and not just industrial America. This project relates to my life in the fact that climate change is an issue I care about. To improve my artwork I would probably add the wind patterns. It may not improve the message of my work but it would make it look a lot better. I could also do a series of these in which I do a similar scratchboard for the most polluting countries and number them.
