Must Be Some Sort of a Record

I chose to draw a fish as my design for the Donate Life competition. I tied the fish into organ and tissue donation, by adding the phrase “let another catch a keeper with organ and tissue donation” as my statement. Organ donation did come up in my life as I did get my license, so I have had some experience with signing up and the process of how to become an organ donor. The fish came about because my brother had sent me a picture of fish he had caught and I came up with the slogan from there.
For this project, I used watercolor paint and a fine point pen on Bristol board to create the final product. I don’t usually work with watercolor and this was a reminder of why I don’t usually use watercolor. The pen was a good way to do the lettering because it produced a finer line than the watercolor would have.
I used color and line to create this project. The fish and background are both created using color to provide depth and differentiate between the background and foreground. The lettering, which was intended to look like fishing line, is just a line. The line loops around and back on itself, but it is just a black line. The project evolved in a straight forward manner after coming up with the slogan. Once I came up with the slogan, I knew I needed to do a fish and I chose a largemouth bass. I sketched the fish and lettering and filled in the color from there. My next steps with this project could be to outline the lettering to make it more legible.
