time capsule drawings

We created four artworks each depicting a different thing. One was a cropped self portrait done from observation, one was our hand in an interesting gesture, one was a hallway at the school or our house, and the final drawing was an item we depend on daily. I created all four of these drawings using graphite pencils. Each was done from observation and one was exercising perspective, one was drawing facial features and body parts, and one was a still life.

The drawings used value, form, and texture. I really tried to use texture on the hat in the mesh sides and back. All of the drawings except the perspective drawing used value in the shading all over them. Form was used on the still life in trying to make it look somewhat three dimensional. I used a 2B, 4B, and an HB pencil on drawing paper. I also used a ruler and an eraser when necessary. I chose to do my eye because I thought it would be an interesting thing to draw, I depend on my hat daily so I drew that, the hallway I chose was just the easiest hallway in my house to draw, and I do that hand gesture frequently so I chose that. I centered most of the images on the page and used a border so there wasn’t too much dead space. The horizon lines are non-existent in this because I didn’t really use a background. The hand drawing evolved the most. I started with an outline and slowly added shading. Starting with the outline made it a lot harder to add realistic shading later.

I depend on my hat most every day to conceal my hair, and so far it hasn’t let me down, so I don’t have to do anything to my hair and this piece this relates to my life and provides this piece with deep sentimental ties to me which gives the piece meaning. I would redo the hat drawing because despite it’s the worst executed one of the four. I would also spend more time on all of them because they all could benefit from the increased attention.
