concentration #5

For my final concentration artwork I created another linoleum carving but this time of my grandfather. I carved the image out of a sheet of linoleum using a carving tool with variety of different heads. I then colored the block with black printmaking ink to create contrast with the stripes. I used line on the repeated stripes in the white areas. I also used value and pattern to create the contrast between the lines and the lines themselves.

I used grouping in the lines. It was grouping because there were sections of lines that were all going one direction. This project was pretty linear in that there weren't many changes that happened during the process of the carving. I had some trouble choosing an image but once my image was chosen the rest of the project followed pretty quickly.

Every year on the fourth of July my grandfather will dress up and will read a historic oration in Harpswell. That was when this image was taken and that is the story behind this carving. This is my grandfather and thus it relates to my life. I wish I had chosen a different image. There isn't anything wrong with this image, it just isn't my favorite image and I think it could be a stronger carving if I used a different image.
