concentration #1

I created a portrait of my brother using embroidery. This was the first project for my concentration which is portraits. I created the project by using thread that I stitched onto a fabric backing. I have wanted to try to use embroidery to create a portrait and this gave me the opportunity to do so. I used shape and color to create this project. Color was used in the different threads and shape was used because the final product was relatively flat.

I used a little bit of soft focus on the more cross-hatched sections. None of these sections have a definite line or edge to them between the color changes. This project evolved by switching from a very tedious stitch pattern to a less defined cross-hatch method. This change was mostly caused by the time limit. I had confused the due date so I rushed to get it done only to realize that I had another night to work on it. So I used this extra night to add more cross hatching so it looked a little more finished.

I have wanted to do a embroidery self portrait for awhile and was pretty excited when the concentration choice was announced. The photo was sent by my brother showing his moustache to my parents. The project relates to my life because it is a portrait of my brother and at my old school we did some sewing and embroidery so it is a return to those skills. I think to improve my project I will add a border and maybe fill in the sketchier areas a little more.
