paper semester reflection

My creation was meant to be abstract, I didn't want it to be easily recognized. I made this with a pair of scissors, a hot glue gun, and a Edward Degas poster. I wanted to try and push a feeling upon the viewer. I made this specific thing trying to make it very angular and clean, with crisp lines and no clutter. I used form to create an octagonal column. I then glued on some long rectangles onto each face of the octagon, except one face.

I didn't really use any compositional rules or techniques in my sculpture. I had begun my project by cutting out a large section of the poster to fold into my octagon. Once I had my octagon I realized that the paper wasn't strong enough to hold its own shape without some additional help. So I added some little supports in the center of the octagon. I also had to add a lot more glue than I originally thought while I was gluing the rectangles to my octagon.

I was trying to imply satisfaction with the clean lines but my lines are not quite as straight as I had hoped. This was because the paper wasn't a heavy enough weight to hold a straight line when it was unsupported. This project was a reflection on our past semester, I was feeling satisfied with how it urned out so I chose to create the sculpture from that. To improve my artwork I would try to support the rectangles by using a thicker paper or covering them with some sort of fixative.
