sea urchins

I created two clay sea urchins. They were shaped with clay, then painted with black underglaze, and then painted with a transparent glaze. The designs were carved into the urchins after the black underglaze had been painted on. The urchins were made with form because they were three dimensional and they also included shape in the carvings on the outside of the urchin.

I didn't make this with many composition rules in mind so there is only really grouping with my lines and patterns on the urchins. This project saw many changes. I was originally planning to create a weasel but I was having some trouble making the form so I scrapped that idea. I then created the sea urchins. I had made three urchins but I ran out of time and wasn't able to sgraffito the final urchin so I didn't use it.

When I was thinking about changing my idea from a weasel my mom suggested a sea urchin and I remembered that they had some very cool textures on the surface. The project relates to my life because Ben and I used to collect sea urchins whenever we went to a beach. I am pretty happy with this project but if I had to change something I would probably finish the third urchin.
