composite figures

I created a composite image of a cow and a whale. I created a print of a creature with a whale’s tail and a cow’s body and head. I carved a linoleum block and printed it using black ink. I then cut this out and glued it to a toned paper. The printed part of this artwork uses value but only the extremes of black and white. There is some color added from the blue toned paper.

The subject of this image is the cow which is very central. There is a high horizon line formed by the clouds. This project was originally not on the toned paper. I had printed it onto bristol paper, but there was a lack of anything in the center. So I cut the cow whale hybrid out and glued it to the blue paper to add something more to the center and make it overall more interesting.

These two ideas were randomly drawn from a hat. They were nouns written by classmates which we each chose two random slips of paper. This artwork didn’t relate to my life all that much. I have seen both whales and cows before but this didn’t influence me while creating this artwork. I am happy with the way this project turned out. To improve it however I would probably clean up the ink around the ears of the cow and reglue it to a cleaner piece of toned paper.
