beautiful oops

For my beautiful oops I incorporated my ink dots into a scene of a woodpecker on a tree. This artwork was created using a combination of materials. I did the background and tree with watercolors and the woodpecker was done using colored pencils. This painting and drawing composite was created using color and value. The color is seen throughout in the red crown of the woodpecker, the background, and the bark of the tree.

Again with this project I didn’t have any composition rules in mind when I was making it. The only thing I was thinking about was that I didn’t want the woodpecker to be centered. My last project had the subject dead center in the paper. I usually center my subjects so I wanted to try and break that trend, but the woodpecker is still pretty centered whether it be slightly off to the right. This project didn’t evolve much or change much during its production. My original idea for this project was to incorporate the dots into a night sky as stars, but the ink drips are black so they would have been virtually invisible in a night sky scene.

This was my idea for how to use ink drops on my paper. I originally was going to create a night sky but once I thought of the woodpecker idea I stuck with it. I think birds look really cool to draw and I always got excited when I would see a woodpecker outside. To improve this artwork I would probably burnish the pencil sections more so there is less white showing through. I could also add more layers of shading to accomplish the same goal of reducing the white showing through. I would also try and add a few more colors in the background and try and blend it into the sky.
