concentration #4

For my fourth installment in the concentration series I used all the prints I had made using the block from my third concentration. I cut and stacked these prints to form a relief. I already had the prints and didn't know what to do with them so I cut them into pieces and stacked them up with a poster board spacer in between them. The artwork was created using value, shape, and emphasis. The black and white represent two extremes of value and the entire image was created using stacked shapes cut from my larger prints. The emphasis comes from the stacking of the layers and the contrast between them.

I used a few composition techniques when creating this relief. One of these was sharp focus in the contrast between the lines and different values of the image. This project evolved from flat to a three dimensional relief. I began with about six prints and used four of them to cut up and stack to create something sculptural.

The story behind this creation was that it was a use for prints which I otherwise wouldn't have used. I had multiple prints from testing my linoleum carving from my third concentration. I wasn't going to use these prints so I decided to use them for my next concentration. I have used this image for multiple projects before in art classes so it has become a little institutionalized in my art work. For an image I took the day before art class standing on my stairs holding a headlamp as light, I have used this image many times and thus it relates to my life. I wish I had cut the corners a little better, but I can live with it. A way I could change this is to put it on a backing which would help with this problem a little.
