sustained Investigation #3

cabin

4"x6"

I created a print of a slightly crooked cabin on a shingle. The cabin has shingles on it and the ground around it is wavy, which I was trying to use to show snow. This project relates to my life in its subject is something that I have always liked. There used to be this small building in South Freeport that I thought was really cool and this piece was trying to show something similar to that building.

I once again used a shingle. Shingles are one of the easiest things to “reclaim” from old buildings because they usually fall off themselves. I printed on it using black block printing ink from a rubber block that I carved. I also had to prepare the shingle because it wasn’t completely flat. It had some grooves and ridges which I sanded flat so the print would come out evenly.

This piece ses only two values: black and white, so there wasn’t much experimentation with creating depth. The contrast is very high between these two values which shows the details of the piece. This project went from sketch to block to final print very quickly. Everything went smoothly and I didn’t have to revise my sketch at all. Next steps with this project could be to print it on more things. I have the block and I am happy with the first shingle print so I could print it on more things.
