For my second indenpendent project I did a contour drawing of a hammer surrounded by bent, and some straight, nails. I did this using sharpies to create a high contrast image. I had wanted to do some contour drawing of tools for a while. A hammer is a commonly recognized tool so I chose that for the first one I did. I wanted to do a contour drawing because it is different from what I usually create. The use of line is a little difficult for me because I usually shade to create value.
I angled the hammer slightly to fill the space more effectively than placing the hammer upright. I didn’t use any compositional rules in my artwork. I did try and use some border breaks to also make the composition a little more interesting. I originally sketched the design out in pencil with no border. I had placed this sketch in a non convenient place for putting a border around it. When I did put a border around it it is not centered on the paper.
I wanted to do something about tools and specifically do the drawing using just contour. I had thought of a design and this piece is similar, but not identical to my idea of the piece. I might want to continue with this idea as a new concentration. To improve my artwork I might try to place the hammer upright and make it completely dark and from a straight on view. I want to do this because it might make it more of a design and as something I could use for stickers or a shirt design.
