Sustained Investigation #11

Blue

8"x6"

The self portraits are back with my sustained investigation #11. I keep doing self portraits because I don’t have enough pictures of people and I can’t come up with faces from imagination. Again this is a picture of myself so it has a relation to my life.

This was done in acrylic on cardboard. I chose to try acrylic because I thought it would suit the color block style because it can lay such thick layers of color down. I used blue for the face and straight red for the background. The shades were mixed using a palette knife.

I used color to make this portrait. I tried to use a color and shades of that color to make the face instead of gray like I have been using in the past. I used similar techniques but just substituted blue for the grays I had used. I was planning on putting a pattern in the background, and I do still plan on doing so, but there were some leftover lines that are still visible despite going over them multiple times with red. I plan on adding a pattern to the background in the future. Other steps could be to add a few more layers to the face to really show the shapes.
