Sustained Investigation #2

The Application Process

9"x11"

The subject of my second sustained investigation is a very simplified face. This is my face so it does have a connection to me in that sense, but the material also adds a second connection. I made it using college brochures that have been sent to me. This material is a nod to the future of myself and, most likely, my art.

As I mentioned earlier, this piece is made of college brochures and admission materials that I cut up. I took a picture of myself and reduced it to a black value, a middle gray, and a white value. I then cut these shapes out of my college admission materials and glued them to a backing which was a booklet from Bowdoin. I cut the pieces out using an exacto knife and glued the pieces together with a glue stick.

I used shape, color, and contrast to achieve the final product with this piece. The shapes that were cut out of are the different levels of darkness on my face. The orange colored middle value already had that color, but I am using it to denote the middle gray on my face. I needed a dark background to contrast the white piece with text and the black piece worked perfectly. I wasn’t originally going to do this piece but my other idea didn’t end up working as expected so I used this piece. I think I could add more identifiable features as my next step. It is difficult to understand the piece at first and I think I could make it easier if I added some more pieces to it.
