sustained investigation #8

My eighth sustained investigation was a portrait of a person looking back over their shoulder. This was a picture of my brother when he was touring a college that i chose because it had good shadows created by his hat and it wasn’t a straight on perspective. This is a picture of my brother so there is a connection through the subject.

I used ink on heavy cardboard to create this piece. The cardboard was the back of a Bristol board sketchbook that was heavy enough that the ink didn’t saturate it. I mixed different shades of gray ink to get three to four shades of gray. I didn’t mix any of the colors I used.

I used color and value to create this piece. The color provided contrast to the grays used to create the figure. Value was the main component in making the figure. Different shades of gray, from dark to light, created depth and gave shape to the figure. This project came about relatively quickly and evolved from start to finish without much revision. My next steps could be to make more patterns with white ink in the purple background and to clean up my lines in the checkered section.
