Sustained Investigation #4

CHimney Fire

4" x 5"

This print was of a chimney in the middle of a small section of roof. The lattice pattern in the background was added to make the background seem complete and without large unused areas. This project relates to my life because the chimney is from a house on a family property in Harpswell. I used to stay in this house in the summer when I was younger. This house has many ties to my life and my family as well.

I again used a shingle as the base for this piece. I created a rubber block carving and printed that block onto the shingle. The ink I used to print that was regular black block printing ink.

The entire image os made of high contrast lines (black and white), but tried to add a little more contrast by adding the things behind the chimney to make the chimney stand out. I also tried to use the light streaks behind the chimney to add movement. I tapered the lines towards the top in an attempt to make it seem like something was rising up off the roof. I did have to go back in after my print to add ink to fill in some holes, but besides that this project went smoothly. My next steps with this project could be to clear coat over the print because right now the ink is water soluble and will run if it gets wet.
