I created this artwork as a statement about global warming. The hands were made from an alginate mold which I then poured plaster into to get the hands shape. The earth and half-melted ice cube were both made from Sculpey and then I painted them with an acrylic paint. The little heating coil was made of wire and painted. I created this artwork using form and color. The hands are completely form and the earth and the ice cube are displaying color.
I didn't use many composition rules in this sculpture except for a little bit of framing. The hands are enclosing the earth and melting ice cube. My ideas for this project changed over the course of the time. I originally was going to create a resin ice cube and pour more resin into the hand to give the illusion of the ice melting. I never found any resins however and didn't end up doing that idea.
This artwork is meant to give the idea that the earth is being heated and that it once had the whole ice cube but now it has melted almost more than halfway. I dislike the idea of global warming and how it is changing the earth so this project relates to my life in that aspect. My opinion on this project has changed recently. I didn't really like and thought it wasn't my best work. I think I could have done better work but I like the artwork now, I am more proud of it than I was. However I think it could be improved by making the wrists more even on the base.
