TRAUMATIC INCIDENTS

INTRODUCTION:

From time to time, incidents of a serious nature occur, which, as well as harming an individual or group directly involved, can harm those who are witnesses to the event or who have association with it.

OBJECTIVES:

To ensure that trauma arising from serious incidents is dealt with effectively so as to minimise future effects on peoples lives

GUIDELINES:

1. If an event of some magnitude occurs in the lives of staff or students of the school, enquiries will be made as to the morale and psyche of those associated with the events.

2. Offers will be made of support, pastoral care, time-out, therapy or counselling, depending on the seriousness of the occasion or event.

3. If the events causing concern are proven to be the responsibiltiy of the school, the school will endeavour to meet the cost of a provision required in (2) above, within reasonable limits.

4. Wherever posssible the school will attempt to meet the needs of staff or students who are traumatised by events associated with school life, a school activity or misadventure relating to school activities.

5. Referrals will be made to appropriate agencies to support individuals or groups who need specialist help.

6. Children who suffer from non school related trauma will be referred to the trauma team at Group Special Education.
