Employment of Staff/Core Workers
Introduction
The Vulnerable Children's Act of 2014, placed on School Boards of Trustees heightened responsibilities when employing staff. These were tightened up in the Education & Training Act 202. These provisions are designed to keep our children and young people safe and to ensure a good quality of care and instruction.
Goals
To provide the Board with assurance of the identity of employees and core workers
To ensure that appropriate back-ground and police checks are carried out for prospective employees and core workers.
To ensure that all Teachers are Registered and have met the necessary performance requirements to be and remain registered.
To ensure that the identity of employees is valid and accurate.
Procedures
Teaching Staff & Core Workers
Two official, visual forms of identity will be used to verify identity of teaching staff or any Core Worker.
C.V.'s or employment records for up to 5 years will be perused if possible and available.
Non familial Referees will be contacted.
Police checks will be conducted and where anomalies exist will be taken to the Board of Trustees for decision whether to employ or not.
Teachers' Council Records or notifications will be checked and where anomalies exist, will be taken to the Board of Trustees for decision whether to employ or not and under what conditions.
Non Teaching Staff
Staff with limited authority to teach will be subject to the same requirements as teachers whilst they pursue their teaching qualifications. As with Beginning Teachers they will be under the supervision of a mentor. Other Support Workers are not expected to be alone with children.
Pt England School has a kaupapa of assisting local people back into employment or of employing local people for the first time.

Pt England School has up to 100 Volunteers engaged in the life of the school in any one year. Nearly all Volunteers are have paid staff oversight whilst supporting our school and are not alone with children.
Volunteers who need to be alone with children, or who have strong programme oversight responsibility will be police checked.
In the event of questions, concerns, or complaints arising in this domain, the principal will be notified. The principal will relay the content of any such approach to Board Chair and together they will promote an appropriate and efficient course of action. This may include notification of the full Board and/or the appropriate authority or agency.
