Definitions:
Images (could include still and moving images in any digitised form)

Pt England School Digital Learning statement:
"The Web 2 environment offers many opportunities to learning and teaching at Pt England School. We intend to continue getting the most out of the positive aspects and to exercise caution in the areas where we observe little education benefit or which may compromise student safety.
The bottom line in all that we do at Pt England School is 'What is best for the children?'. In view of this, we explore Web 2 environments which will enhance learning and teaching and foster our eLearning goals of personal voice, authentic audience and students as creators of content rather than consumers. Many Web 2 environments also promote the goals of our Manaiakalani work around using eLearning to improve student literacy outcomes."
Board of Trustees
"Ultimately the BOT of a school is legally responsible for the conduct of its school, including the operation of the school's website" Guidelines for Schools, 2000
Parent Community
Have the right to make an informed decision about the publication of their own children's images and schoolwork in online spaces and other media such as television
The policies of the school and actions of the teaching staff should reflect the majority wishes of the parent community
From time to time a parent or legal guardian, in partnership with the senior management, may agree to publication outside of the guidelines below eg when a student is interviewed by the media
Pt England School has developed student, whanau, staff and site release forms for when media or partners wish to use our images or content to promote a narrative, partnership or brand.
Senior Management
Establish policy guidelines that reflect the wishes of the parent community
Inform and update the BOT
Manage the outworking of these policies with teaching staff and students
Ensure permission is granted for internet use and publication of students work online and on television, in writing by parents/legal guardians on enrolment
Teaching Staff
There are two aspects this policy covers for teaching staff; teachers working with students and publishing their images and schoolwork online, teachers publishing online themselves as educators
1. Teachers professional responsibility when working with students and publishing their images and schoolwork online
Understand and acknowledge the rights of students
The student owns the copy right of their own artistic and literary works
Policy set by BOT > senior management in relation to students rights should be observed
'Right of Integrity' ie protection from derogatory treatment of their work
Right to say 'no' to their work being published or to request its removal
Pt England School BOT is a signatory to the Creative Commons Share and Share Alike Copyright License
Ensure the purpose for using a particular environment is clear
to students
senior management
users of the online space in the wider community
To ensure safety procedures are observed
students will only be identified by first name and class or year
students have had formal class lessons preceding the introduction of any new online environment around the issues outlined in the student policy and relevant to the new space being introduced.
teacher is present when students are online at school
teachers are in loco parentis for learners during the hours school is in session.
Ensure the content of the work published
Reflects our dedication to quality
Uses standard English (where English is being used) to support the "language of success"
Is within the three guidelines (of Guidelines for Schools, 2000) and is either;
to educate in accordance with the NZC
to encourage the student to participate in the school and wider community
to promote the school in the wider community
NB: this includes widgets and third party gadgets embedded eg sidebar gadgets in blogger
Take responsibility for all material published online in spaces they have authorised for student work to appear. This includes:
Having an RSS feed (where available) of changes to the space that is monitored daily
Checking student content that is being published to ensure it reflects this policy
Specifically monitoring comments made on the sites
Only publish student images and schoolwork on sites that have been agreed to by senior management
Video content is only to be posted online on iTunes, Flickr, Google Drive the school website and class blogs. Other sites, e.g. Youtube Channels need prior approval from the Principal.
Before considering implementing any Web 2 environments with a class the teacher must have explored a sufficient number of similar sites to have gained familiarity with the 'genre'.
2. To support teachers in carrying this out
All online accounts set up of any kind which include Pt England School students will:
be owned by the teacher or school (or in some cases the parent) , NOT by a student
use the school domain email address; either teacher@ptengland.school.nz or room@ptengland.school.nz
where possible will have dual ownership with SMT or a generic account eg pesblog@ptengland.school.nz
All online accounts which hold images or schoolwork of Pt England students must be recorded in the secure Google spreadsheet set up for this including; URL, login name, password
3. When a teacher leaves the school and is no longer managing accounts set up for students the online spaces must be left secure
Another teacher designated to assume responsibility or
Ability to comment removed or
Site and material removed
2. Teachers professional responsibility as adult educators in the online environment
When interacting with students the teacher will
demonstrate the clear purpose for online interaction as a teacher on student centred online spaces ie. giving feedback/feedforward contributing to their learning
refrain from interacting with students on non-education related social networking sites eg Bebo, Facebook
When interacting online with other adults using the Pt England School domain name or in any way identifying as an employee of Pt England School the teacher will
be personally responsible for any content referring to Pt England School that the teacher posts online
ensure that the use of the internet or email does not in any way bring Pt England School into disrepute, including expressing any opinion online which could reflect on or be attributed to the school negatively.
have permission from any staff member photographed or videoed before making their image public online or transporting it digitally outside the school.
Students
There are two aspects to this; Acceptable use policies for the students to understand and agree to, and Publication of student images and schoolwork
1. Acceptable use policies for the students to understand and agree to:
Pt England kids online:
have a teacher present in the room when using the internet
only go to sites the teacher approves of, that support learning
mostly use our own artwork and music
if we need to use other people's work we ask first and acknowledge the author/owner
know the right thing to do if we come across any inappropriate content, and follow the reminder on the wall on our netsafe poster
use kind, caring and supportive words
only use our first names and class to identify ourselves
only edit posts and work we have created ourselves
are the copy-righted owners of work we have created and published
Are only signed up for management approved, age legal accounts where the TOS are favourable to the child
2. Publication of student images and schoolwork:
Pt England students' images and schoolwork are published in multiples environments; online on television and in print media.
Television
PE.N.N. the Pt England News Network which plays on our in-house school television four days a week
Other Television channels which come into the school and require Management Release, Site Release and Individual Release prior to content leaving the school.
Online & Print
The Pt England School Website http://www.ptengland.school.nz
School blogs - where we celebrate and share our learning
Podcasts eg KPE Korero Pt England
Global projects we work on with teachers eg Rock Our World
Google Apps inside the Pt England domain
Other Web 2 sites the teachers have selected because they help us embed our work in our blogs and website
Corporate, media and charity channels
Corporate, charitable or media print channels
These last two require the same kind of release permissions as the TV ones. Pt England Staff need to be very mindful of requests for images and content and ensure that we have informed consent and the correct permissions each time.
NB: Policies for Primary/Intermediate are slightly different from college age students ie. Younger students have parents or legal guardians give permission for publication, college age students have to give permission themselves AND have parent permission
