INTRODUCTION:
As a multi-cultural school all adults and children at Pt England will be respected as individuals and their differing cultures and languages valued as part of our rich school environment.
English is taught as a second language to children that are non English speakers or other language backgrounds so they can benefit from the full and balanced programme and develop to their potential which is their right as members of NZ Society.
GUIDELINES:
1. The school is committed to a holistic approach when supporting children who are new learners of English.
2. An enrolment policy is in use which collects appropriate information and ensures correct placement of new learners of English.
3. A Buddy system is used throughout the school when necessary to support new learners of English when first enrolled.
4. Specially trained staff are available to carry out bi-lingual assessments with the help of interpreters from the school community.
5. Ethnic resources are available to supply information to the teacher, children and to make the child feel at home.
6. A rich classroom programme is planned and executed in all rooms using scaffolding of ideas and vocabulary as a base.
7. ESOL is included in the annual Curriculum budget to purchase resources for the programme.
8. All new learners of English are scored against the ELLP Progressions twice a year and funding is granted by the Ministry to support the children in the school.
9. The ESOL Ministry funding supports the new learners of English in a wide variety of ways.
10.When necessary teachers supervise the training of peer tutors, and the administering of appropriate programmes or interventions to the most needy children when suitable tutors are available.
11. Children in ESOL groups are assessed regularly and the programme evaluated at the end of each term.
12. “Home/School Partnership” meetings will be held each term to communicate with and inform parents by using ethnic groups for discussion as and when appropriate.
13. Parents are encouraged to participate in all school activities.
14. Personnel from the Migrant and Refugee Education Team, M.O.E. are consulted if difficulties arise with new migrants.
15. Whole School Professional Development will be undertaken regularly to ensure teachers understand the needs and have the skills required for ESOL learners.
