PT ENGLAND SCHOOL POLICY
TE REO MĀORI
INTRODUCTION:
This statement will assist our school to meet the goal of valuing New Zealand’s dual cultural heritage.
Māori are the Tangata whenua of Aotearoa/New Zealand and their language and culture are an integral part of the New Zealand society.
Our school is 30% Māori and this reflects quite closely the demographics of our community. Māori is the largest single group and does not represent any particular Iwi more strongly than others. Our local Maori rohe is named Nga Iwi Katoa, our Mana Whenua are Ngāti Paoa, our local marae are Ruapotaka, Te Tira Hou and Kokiri. Recently we have had a Treaty Settlement clearly naming Ngati Paoa as manawhenua, they share this status for parts of our community with Ngai Tai and Ngati Whatua
OBJECTIVES:
1. To provide oral instruction in te reo Māori to all classes.
2. To provide support for the class programmes so that input from the language lesson can be consolidated during the week.
3. To provide assistance in the development of Tikanga Māori across the curriculum.
4. To assess entry levels and determine progress through oral assessment tasks during the year.
GUIDELINES:
1. The 2025 programme will be set up and devised in accordance with the discussions held with our parent body and BOT during 2024
2. The Kaiako will deliver a half hour language lesson in each Y1 - Y6 class of the school, each week.
3. He/she will be supported in this by the Maori Curriculum Resource teachers ensuring:
(a) that we have sufficient resources to support and consolidate the programme.
(b) that the programme is at appropriate levels and suited to individual needs within the classroom.
4. Our Y7/8 Learners receive te reo Māori as their language to learn beyond English. This language programme is delivered by whaea Safron Witika. This occurs weekly in all Y7 - Y8 classes
5. From time to time we involve staff from Kura in Manaiakalani in assisting in programme design and helping to organise and focus resources and meet compliances regarding consultation with our Maori Community. We regularly consult our Kaiako and our Kaumatua, Tautoko Witika,along with Drina Paratene (Ngati Paoa) regarding protocol for occasions and our approach to tikanga.
6. The Māori Curriculum Resource Teachers will further assist by giving on-going support to class programmes as needed
7. Te Reo Māori programme is expected to cover the language criteria listed in the Teacher Planning Module of the Teacher Dashboard at each level. This is only to be a small part of the total programme
8. We continue to refer back to Tihei Mauri Ora, Te Ata Hapara 1 & 2 and Matariki 1 as useful resources from the past, along with Te Reo Maori in the NZ Curriculum and Ka Hikitia and Tā Taiako as the resources that provide the kaupapa, language and content for the various themes, settings and topics required.
9. During 2023, the Manaiakalani Kaupapa was made avaialable te reo Māori and is known as Te Matau o te Rangi.
10. In the event of questions, concerns, or even complaints arising from this programme, the principal will be notified. The principal will relay the content of any such approach to the Māori Resource Teachers who will then meet with the Kaiako to find the best way in which to handle the approach. From time to time the staff meeting or Team meetings may be used as avenues for discussing, altering or evaluating this programme.
Conclusion
In implementing this policy the school and the Board recognise the dual strands of New Zealand society.
