PT ENGLAND SCHOOL POLICY 2005
NAG 5.15
EMERGENCY PLANS
INTRODUCTION:
The school is very well provided with communication equipment; phones in each room, an excellent intercom system and a television network. We will handle emergency situations by talking, as many of these kinds of occurrences are fluid and unpredictable and different numbers of bells ringing gets very confusing. The Principal or Associate Principal 1 will take control of the communication on these occasions. If neither of these are available the Office Staff or Associate Principal 2 will do the task.
If the situation does not require broadcast or would be better if only specific teachers or individuals heard, we will use the telephones which are present in every room and working space.
In every situation, adults working with children, whether in classes or in groups or with individual children, will continue to take control of those children until such time as the situation is resolved to the point where their care can be handed over to a more suitable person or place.
FIRE & EVACUATION
1. For fire or any situation requiring evacuation, see procedures in Fire & Evacuation Plan
EARTHQUAKE
1 In cases where warning is received, an announcement will be made.
2 Responsible adults are to keep children indoors and under desks or some other solid item of furniture
3 Children and adults are to remain there until the all clear is communicated
4. There is often no warning of earthquakes, teachers are to teach and train children what to do in this situation. This is to be practised in classes termly, without central warning.
5 In an unwarned situation, responsible adults are to instruct children in their care to comply with the procedure mentioned above until the school management is able to communicate further.
ARMED OFFENDER
1. In cases where warning is received, responsible adults who are with children indoors are to keep children inside and under close control
2. Initial comms will be the school intercom initiated by a long beep tone, radio holders should turn their radios on, phones should be on silent, teachers and other staff should have their laptops with them, silent and available for notifications and updates. School website and school app will be updated as appropriate.
3. If the school is outside, i.e. morning tea, lunch, sports etc, responsible adults should keep their children together, under control and head for the safest place available, which may be the classroom.
4. If practicable lock all external doors to your part of the building, unless an offender is in your part of the building.
5. If the problem is on our property and if practicable, seat or lie children below window sill height and depending on the kind of room you are in, draw the curtains.
6. People are more important than things. If things are requested, yield them up immediately.
7. Try to note details of description of offender, kind of arms carried, escape route and vehicle used. Don’t talk about it afterwards, write it down & date it.
8. School will be kept secure until police arrive and until police inform the ending of lock-down
8. Hold your children in the most secure environment you can until you receive notice that the situation is resolved
9. Notifications will come from the school management team, if possible, keep your phone with you on silent, we are most likely to communicate via email.
