ASTHMA
INTRODUCTION:
Asthma is a respiratory condition resulting in difficulty in breathing, tight feeling in the chest, cough or wheeze. It is not contagious.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To maintain the safety of the child with Asthma during school hours.
2. To identify students with Asthma at enrolment.
3. To encourage children with Asthma to have information provided on their medication to the school.
GUIDELINES:
1. Parents should provide information about child’s Asthma annually or;
-when child is newly diagnosed
-when child is enrolled at school
-when child changes class or teacher
-when a child's condition changes in any significant way
2. School should obtain extra information if needed from appropriate sources, i.e. Auckland Asthma Society or Public Health Nurse.
3. Pupils should know where their medication is kept and know who to report to for medication.
4. Staff should know who is responsible for administering medication and be aware of signs and symptoms when further medical assistance is required.
