PT ENGLAND SCHOOL POLICY 2002
NAG 2.7
CONSULTATION
INTRODUCTION:
Pt England School is committed to a programme of community partnership which includes the consultation of and partnership with Maori along with all the other major ethnic goupings. This consultation is related to students' academic success, engagement and curriculum directions as well as other more social or health related issues.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To communicate well with the Pt England Community
2. To provide a reference point for decision making, planning and practice.
3. To build an agreed school culture to promote success
4. To gather and respond to the concerns of our community
5. To meet the obligations expressed in National Education Guidelines 1 & 2. & NELP's
GUIDELINES:
1. The Pt England Parents Support Group which evolved into the Parents Association, was ultimately replaced by the Home School Partnership now named "Families @ Pt England".
2. Families @ Pt England comprises 7 or 8 ethnic groups which meet on average, twice a term. Each group has a liaison teacher and a liaison parent. These people have attended structured training provided by the Ministry of Education. The groups are:
Maori, Cook Island, Samoan, Tongan, Niuean, Asia-Pacific, European, Myanmar
3. These groups and all others are consulted regularly with respect to curriculum, planned innovation and issues which affect the school community. We also use this group as a vehicle for communicating with agencies, local government and government. We meet regularly to participate with our parents in curriculum development and for parent education and partnership with the school. We consult formally with our community annually with regard to all legislative requirements even though some of these, e.g. Health, only require consultation every 18 months. We consult all groups even where the legislative requirement is only for one group, e.g Maori.
4. When the groups meet, we all start and generally finish together. We have an agenda which includes practical issues of parent involvement in the life of the school, strategic, directional consultation, academic information and discussion, methods for parents to use as first teachers, and legislative consultation.
5. Legislative consultation includes:
Health/Sexuality Education, Maori succeeding as Maori & associated strategic/curriculum direction, Pasifika suceeding as Pasifika, Y7/8 Programmes, Performance against the NZ Curriculum, Annual Targets, Charter.
