Firstly, there is the Stanley Hotel. The Stanley Hotel was built by F.O. Stanley on June 22, 1909. The first report of ghosts in the Stanley Hotel was in 1911. The story goes that in 1911, a bad storm knocked out the power in the hotel, and Elizabeth Wilson, a housekeeper at the hotel, was going around with a candle in her hand. She went into room 217, unaware that there was a gas leak in that room. When she entered, she was electrocuted by the gas leak explosion. She thankfully survived, and continued to work there. After her death, it is said that Elizabeth Wilson returned to room 217 and continues to haunt it.
Next, we are going somewhere closer to home, with the Watson Mill. Joseph Currier’s married life didn’t start well. In 1846, he married Christina Wilson, and together they had 4 children. But sadly, three of those children died from scarlet fever within five days of each other, then, tragically, his wife died three years later. Two years later, he fell in love with another woman, Ann
Crosby, who was twice his junior, but that didn’t matter. In 1860 they married, and in 1861, Joseph Currier brought his wife to see the mill. Unfortunately, Joseph didn’t know that death was watching him. Ann wandered away from her husband. Her long dress got caught in the machinery, and she was thrown towards a big wooden beam, her head struck the beam, and sadly, she died instantly. Joseph ran to his wife to see if he could do anything, but she was already dead. Joseph Currier was so distraught that he never returned to Manotick. But it seems that Ann’s spirit didn’t leave. It is said that on August nights, you can see a young woman looking out of a second floor window with a sad expression. Could this be the ghost of Ann Crosby? Everyone thinks so.
Finally, the last and the most haunted place of all is the Tower of London. The Tower of London was built around the year 1077 at William the Conqueror’s request. There are many ghost stories about this place, so I will only tell the most well known one, the story of Anne Boleyn. Anne Boleyn was the second wife of tyrant King Henry VIII. When she married Henry, she was somewhere between 28 and 31, while Henry was 41 years old. However, in April of 1536, Henry VIII thought that Anne was being disloyal to him, so he ordered an investigation. On the 15th of May, 1536, Anne was charged with adultery, incest and and treason. On the 19th of May, Anne was beheaded in tower green. Today, many visitors see a ghostly carriage, with headless horses, a headless coachman and in the carriage is the headless ghost of Anne Boleyn, with her head neatly placed on her lap.
