GAS LINES
GAS LINES
We generally convert all houses to all electric. BEFORE YOU REMOVE GAS LINES, make sure to get clearance from Jeff.
If we are converting a house to an all-electric, then the gas lines need to be abandoned to the house. This involves removing the gas meter, by Columbia Gas.
To abandon the gas lines, create a To-Do called "Abandon gas lines" and tag "Burr Oak - Utilities," asking them to abandon the gas.
This process takes about a month to complete.
A lot of times, we will leave gas lines in the house, but plug and cap them. See the video and picture below for information on how to do that.
NO LINE SHOULD EVER BE LEFT UNCAPPED.
In order to request that a gas line be abandoned, you must know if the gas line needs to be only capped with the gas lines left in for possible future use or if the lines need to be completely removed. It is best to get clarification from Jeff about the specifics of the request.
To make this request, you will:
Call Columbia Gas at 1-800-432-9345, select "0". and give the rep the property address to pull up the account.
Explain the specific details of your request clearly and ask for a reference or work order number for the request.
After you have obtained that information, add the detailed notes from your call, including the date the technician will be coming out to complete the work order, to the property's utility board by adding an update to the Gas section.
Note:
*They are difficult when it comes to abandoning gas lines.
*When making the abandonment request, they will ask you to submit a deed to the property, as well as a letter saying that you are requesting the abandonment. IF THEY SAY THIS, you are to respond with, “We have done this more than 100 times, and in our extensive history over the last decade with you, this is not required. As such, this phone call should suffice.”
IF THE REPRESENTATIVE INSISTS on going the route of getting a deed- please thank them for their time, end the conversation, and call back to talk to a different representative. DO NOT tell the new rep that you have already called in to do this.
This is an example of a gas plug.
The video below is an example of WHAT NOT TO DO. The reason why we plug and cap everything is because somebody can open it and cause an explosion.
A lot of times, people remove appliances before we get to the house and do not cap the gas lines. That is why we should always cap them.
This video shows removing broken nipple.
Home explodes after contractor hits gas line
Note that it is very important to make sure there are no leaks, because explosions can happen.
