Cut blocking without a tape measure

When the blocking is only filling the bay (not forcing bowed joists straight), skip the tape. Lay a long 2x across the joists. Butt one end tight against the inside face of one joist. Rest a circular saw on the board and push the right edge of the saw shoe firmly against the outside face of the other joist, then cut. On a standard sidewinder, the blade sits about 1.5 inches in from that shoe edge — the same thickness as 2x lumber  so the cut lands flush with the inside face of that joist and the block drops into the bay. Slide the leftover board and repeat for the next bay.

Be careful where you use this. It cuts to the bay as it sits. If you need to straighten bowed joists onto a strict on-center layout, cut uniform blocks and force the joists true against them instead.

Cuando el blocking solo llena el vano (no fuerza las viguetas torcidas a enderezar), no uses la cinta. Coloca un 2x largo sobre las viguetas. Apoya un extremo bien contra la cara interior de una vigueta. Pon la sierra circular sobre la tabla y empuja el borde derecho de la base (shoe) firmemente contra la cara exterior de la otra vigueta, y corta. En una sidewinder estándar, la hoja queda a unos 1.5 pulgadas de ese borde de la base — el mismo espesor que la madera 2x  as que el corte cae a ras con la cara interior de esa vigueta y el bloque entra en el vano. Desliza el resto de la tabla y repite en el siguiente vano.

Ten cuidado dónde lo usas. Esto corta al ancho del vano tal como está. Si necesitas enderezar viguetas torcidas a un centro a centro estricto, corta bloques uniformes y fuerza las viguetas contra ellos.

Scribe a parallel rip line with a tape and pencil

English:

Hook the tape on the edge of the board. Pinch a carpenters pencil against the blade at the measurement you need (for example 9 inches). Keep the tape hooked and tight, and walk the hook along the edge while the pencil rides the face. That draws a straight line parallel to the edge for a rip cut — no long straightedge and no chalk line. Spot-check the line with the tape at a few places along the board.

Engancha la cinta en el borde de la tabla. Sujeta un lápiz de carpintero contra la cinta en la medida que necesitas (por ejemplo 9 pulgadas). Mantén la cinta enganchada y tensa, y desliza el gancho a lo largo del borde mientras el lápiz marca la cara.
