Dpn1 is an enzyme (a restriction endonuclease) that cleaves at specific methylated sites of DNA. It degrades template DNA from a PCR reaction, but does not degrade the newly synthesized DNA.
How did this come to be?
Restriction endonucleases are used, in prokaryotes, to protect themselves from foreign DNA. Other organisms in turn, methylate themselves at specific locations in order to prevent their degradation
