Stage 1: Learning by doing. Follow the established protocols and see if you can do them on your own. Know when to ask for help.
Stage 2: Contribution to new protocols. Understand how the exisiting protocols work (especially at the molecular level) and see if you can improve an existing protocol or develop a new protocol that works. Talk to Dr Norimatsu or advanced students in the lab for advice. If a new protocol works, please make a new video.
Stage 3: Developing expertise. Try to understand the top priorities of the lab and existing problems to be solved. Discuss with Dr Norimatsu or Emma how you might be able to help with those. Focus on a small area and become an expert in that area (e.g. subcloning, protein modification, PyMOL, VMD).
Stage 4: Owning a project. There are many mini-projects to be done in the lab. Pick one and develop a narrative for your project. Discuss with Dr Norimatsu or Emma what problem you want to solve and how you might go about it.
