Diablo Weavers Meeting Friday, December 18, 2020

Our December meeting will be at 10 am on Friday, December 18, the third Friday of the month. You will receive an email Zoom invite before then.

December Gathering on Zoom

Our December "meeting" will be an informal gathering with a short business meeting and a holiday related "show and tell", sharing holiday ideas and any projects you have finished or have in progress. If you have something to share, please send photos in to Vilija to compile for viewing (details below).

********************************************************************************************************

Each month for sharing, photos for Diablo should be sent to Vilija by noon on the Thursday before each meeting. That gives her enough time to get the last minute ones in. The sooner, the better for her. However, she said that she can definitely handle “last minute”.

If members have a preference on how they want their pics shown, they should include info on that.

Mayan Weavers Cooperative Online Sale

Jolom Mayaetik at the Hillside Club

Charlene Woodcock gave a presentation for Diablo several years ago about her work with the Jolom Mayaetik Weavers Cooperative. Here is an update from her about the annual holiday sale.

Some of you will have visited the Hillside Club in Berkeley for the annual Holiday Art Sale, which this year is accessible online. As you think about holiday gifts, I hope you’ll scroll through the photos of handwoven textiles from the Jolom Mayaetik weavers’ cooperative for possibilities. There was a good response to the email I sent out in August, when I learned of the significant loss of income for the weavers as the pandemic closed markets. I hope many of you will find something among the cooperative’s work that would please someone you know. I can provide small cards for gift purchases that give a brief history of the cooperative. To arrange for a purchase, email me at charlene@woodynet.net.

FROM THE GILMORE WEBSITE: GEM II

"This loom is a "jack" type loom. It has 8 harnesses and 10 treadles.

It has a generous shed and accommodates 23 1/2" inch reeds. The GEM II weaves 22 inches wide. It is made so the weaver can sit in a regular chair and weave. The woven cloth goes up around a "knee bar" then to the cloth beam. This keeps the cloth away from your knees and allows even the tallest of weavers to sit

comfortably into the loom.

The front cloth beam is a ratchet type, with the advance handle on the right side. The warp beam has a cable on a hardwood drum friction brake. This brake can be released from the front, using a foot pedal, or released from the back where there is also a brake release pedal."
