Introduction to Card Weaving: Discover Card Weaving: Ancient Technique - Modern Delight with Gudrun Polak

From Gudrun:

Using simple tools, a set of square cards, a small shuttle, and any kind of smooth yarn, the technique called card weaving or tablet weaving allows you to create bands of intricate patterns. I have explored card weaving for several years and will introduce you to this wonderful technique with

    • a slide show,

    • a display of 50+ woven samples,

    • and demonstrations,

You will hear about the history of card weaving, times, places, and styles that created most remarkable designs. You will see many of my own designs and hear how I go about to develop a pattern.

In Memoriam:

Julie Cahoon, a member of Diablo Weavers for many years, died on December 23, 2009. A memorial took place on January 2, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Rossmoor.

Julie was an avid knitter and tapestry weaver. Julie's husband decided to donate Julie's two tapestry looms to the guild. He felt that she would like to see the looms used, and the guild was an important part of her life.

Although not able to attend many meetings recently, Julie will be missed by all of us in Diablo Weavers.

Getting ready for CNCH 2010 in Santa Clara:

"A WORLD OF POSSIBILITY"

This is the title of the gallery exhibit at the upcoming CNCH conference that will show off hand woven yardage. Last Spring we had the idea to make this a guild project with Diablo members donating a small swatch or two of fabric to be sewn together to form a "yardage" display. We had thought about overdyeing with red to harmonize the fabric, but that would depend on what is brought in. You can begin bringing in your fabrics at any meeting so we can begin thinking about how to put them together. Any kind of fabric swatch will do--anything!

The big thing is we need someone to volunteer to do the "putting together". We should spend a bit of time at the meeting discussing this. Maybe a workshop day, or whatever. Put your thinking caps on to come up with a plan.
