The House For Nomads Tapestries: A Tale of Three Continents

A Morning With Michael F. Rohde

at the Diablo Weavers Guild Meeting January 21, 2011, 11 AM

In the summer of 2006, Michael Rohde spent a month traveling in the remote grasslands of eastern Tibet. The visit took him among nomadic yak herders, seldom visited villages and active monasteries. The trip was timed to allow visits to several festivals: a huge gathering of nomads, a village shaman leading celebrations of the coming harvest and their mountain gods, as well as a horse festival in Litang.

It was a special time, as things are changing. Roads are being built where there were none before, the Chinese are fencing the yak grazing pastures, as well as building houses to settle the nomads.

Based on this experience, Michael created a body of more than twenty-two tapestries, which were recently exhibited at the Janina Monkute-Marks Museum in Lithuania. He will give a presentation with images of the inspirations for the tapestries, pictures of the tapestries and the museum exhibition, and a subsequent exhibition in California.

Snack for the meeting: Aiko

Because our Library is having a book sale on the week of our meeting, we will once again be meeting at Joan's clubhouse. If you are not familiar with this area, consult a map just to get a better feel for the directions below and the amount of time it will take you.

Directions to the Clubhouse:

If you do GPS, plug in the intersection of Trails End and Broncho Lane, Walnut Creek to get you close, then follow the end of the directions below. The club house does not have an "address".

From Hwy 680, Ygnacio east to Oak Grove [the street you turn onto for the Library]. Right turn onto Oak Grove. Follow Oak Grove through several stop signs and through the one and only round-about. Left turn onto North Gate Rd , just past the round-about. Right turn onto Trails End, go past Broncho Lane to the end of Trails End. Veer to your left through the gate towards the barns and the horse paddocks.

The club house is on your right with just a couple parking spaces in front. Please don't park any where past the club house by the barn, or in front of the fenced pasture across from the club house. Try to park beside the road before you get to the club house. All of this is as requested by the horse owners, they are always worried about emergency access, and/or getting their trailers and trucks in and out.

Meeting will begin at 10 AM with a break at about 10;40. Depending on the business we have, there will probably not be much time for Show & Tell at this meeting. Actually, we are having Guest Speakers for the next three months, so unless you can't hang on to what you have to show, please try to save it for April. We would like to have time to chat and help the speakers set up and let them begin promptly at 11 AM.
