Movere Deinceps
For this composition, I used Flat.io to create my piece. I learned about Flat from my music teacher. She likes this program because we can login with our Google account information. She also likes this program because it is FREE!
I like music and play the violin in DCMS Strings Orchestra, but understand how all string instruments work. For this project, I wanted to create a piece that dealt with moving forward after a loss. Movere Deinceps means moving forward in latin, at least that’s what Google translate said.
I aspired for a more lighthearted piece that moves to a more dismal ending. After every measure I listened to the composition and thought about what would sound beneficial for the piece. For example, the piece slows down making the song sound more melancholy.
I incorporated major chords at the beginning showing that the person believes they’ve moved forward. Later on, at measure twenty five, there are minor chords showing that the protagonist has really not moved on after their loved one’s death. The piece ends with a fast, Major A chord of sixteenth notes displaying the protagonist moving on.

Márta Prionsa na hÉireann (The Prince of Ireland’s March)
When writing this piece, I wanted it to convey an entire orchestra with a few instruments. These instruments include the Trumpet, Trombone, Snare Drum, Flute, Bass Clarinet, and Clarinet. I wrote this ABA form piece in Flat, a google program.
I begin the A part with a trumpet melody, and every instrument pretty much doing their own thing. I have a quiet fast Trombone Part, a beat keeping pace from the Snare Drum Part, A melody from the Trumpet and Clarinet Part, and a secondary harmony from the Flute Part and a separate harmony from the Bass Clarinet Part. I have this A part continue for 10 measures, until it shifts into my B part. The beginning of the B part has a Bass Trombone Part, a melody with the Flute Part, and a harmony with the Clarinet and Bass Clarinet Parts. In measure 15, the trombone takes over the melody. In measure 16, the bass clarinet joins the melody, in 17 the trumpet join, and continue it out until the end of part B. Part B repeats twice before A picks back up again. To end the piece, I bring back the 2nd part of B and finish with a big ritardando.
