First we brainstormed what we wanted to build. We wanted to be different from other groups, to provide a fresh, new perspective to the judges. So that immediately meant for us that we were not going to use the beautiful cave system mammoth cave. We settled on the other natural beauties of Kentucky, and showcased all that Kentucky had to offer. So, after much work, and research, we settled on Red River Gorge’s land bridge, the underground waterfall in Red River Gorge, and the Cumberland Falls.
It was challenging to decide which landmark to use, because we knew we did not want to use Mammoth Cave. So, the question was, what else could we find about Kentucky that was just as incredible as Mammoth Cave? Well, what we learned from this is that Kentucky has much more natural beauty than just Mammoth cave. We then found our beautiful locations, and knew we had made the right decision.
We decided to build Red River Gorge and Cumberland Falls because these places, as stated above, do really show the beauty of Kentucky. We also picked these places out of personal experience. From seeing the moonbow as kids, (which we were not able to create in minecraft) to going to Red River gorge and walking the beautiful trails. So, we decided to capture this in Minecraft, to show the real beauty of Kentucky.
To start, we built the Natural Bridge in Red River Gorge. Our first build was not successful, because it was not even close to large enough to be in the proportion of the Natural Bridge in Red River Gorge. So we decided that in order to build something of the magnitude of the Natural Bridge, we needed to create a massive block that we could carve to what the Natural Bridge looks like. After doing this, the rest was smooth sailing, with Idris leading all of the decorating of the Natural Bridge.
Then we began building the underground waterfall, and the first KFC. KFC took minimal brainstorming of how we were actually going to build because there are images of the first KFC all over the internet. So, after verifying the picture, we set to work, and created the first KFC, while adding our own creativity to the KFC to give the viewer the “KFC experience.”
Then came the challenging part. We had to figure out how to create an underground experience in Minecraft Bedrock, which has a limit on how low you can build. Well the answer to that is lowering the amount that the viewer can see. So what we decided to do was to lower the amount of space in the cave, so that what the viewer sees is limited to just seeing the cave.
Next we began the building process of Cumberland Falls. While Silas and Idris built the Natural Bridge, the KFC, and the underground caves, Jaxon built the Cumberland Falls. The Cumberland Falls project obviously had a lot of inspiration, but we were trying to think if it was possible for the moonbow to be built in Minecraft. So, we built the Cumberland Falls in the best way possible, but unfortunately, were not able to create the moonbow. This then completed our creation of the project in Minecraft, and laid out the foundations of what we were going to present for this project.
Finally we screen recorded our build using Loom. Loom gave us the best possible footage so that we can show our builds to all the people who view this project. We took the video we recorded and uploaded it into HitFilm to edit. While we edited we added: transitions, audio clips, and video clips from loom to create our video.
About our research:
As we worked, we searched for images and facts about each place in order to capture the beauty and wonder of the natural beauty we were trying to display. For Red River Gorge Natural Bridge, we looked up How long it took to form, material it was made from, and how long and wide the Natural Bridge actually is. For Red river gorge underground waterfall, we looked at how to show how it was formed, and how it looks so that we could create the waterfall in Minecraft. For the first KFC, we did research on Colonel Sanders, and where and when the first KFC was formed. For Cumberland Falls, we searched what the falls look like, and how the falls were formed, along with images to inspire the build in Minecraft.
