Digital Art

I created my digital art about the Saturn V in the mission Apollo 11 lifting off in Launch Pad 39A. I did this because I like everything about space, especially rockets. I chose to use the colors because I wanted my art to look like a real rocket. I thought the rocket and mission should be recreated as real as possible.

My first step to create my digital art was to search images of the Saturn V lifting off. I kept the image pulled up on my old cell phone to see the image at the same time I was sketching the draft.

Next, I created a second layer, with less opacity to be able to see my draft, on this layer I just used the bucket tool with a dark blue for the main background. As I was drawing, I used the ruler option to help me draw the tanks .

My third step was to create another layer in the app, and start making the launch pad. I drew the fairing, the capsule and the abort tower and added details to all of those parts.

After finishing the launchpad I created another layer, this time with the F-1 engines. I created the plume with dark orange in the fuel rich section, then used a yellowish orange to create the rest of the plume. I also used a translucent brush to create light effects on the engine, and finally added the steam from the evaporated water and dust.

In the last layer, I created a big moon on the background, using the circle shapes with different shades. I also added some small dots to represent stars. To finish the digital art piece, I added my signature.

The program that I used to create my digital art is named Sketchbook. It contains different tools to create art. I like Sketchbook because it’s easy to use and very useful. I feel like Sketchbook has all of the tools that you need and more.

Digital Art

I created this digital art because when I think about space I am able to not think about my problems because I can think of all the beautiful things in space.

To create my digital art, I used an app called Procreate on my iPad pro, Procreate is free to download. I often create digital art on my iPad pro. Procreate is a great program to use for creative purposes. I use this program almost weekly to make artwork because it is fairly easy to learn how to use.

The first thing I did was think about what I wanted to draw. So, I thought about things that I like that inspire me. Then, I almost immediately thought of space, because like I said before, space really inspires me!

For the steps, I wanted to make sure that they looked real while also being cartoony almost. So, I made sure to shade them and make the steps smaller the closer they got to the top to make them seem further away. I also spent a while picking the brown shades for the stairs.

For the doorway, I decided to do an archway instead of a rectangular doorway. I chose this because an archway just seems looser and to me just seems calming!

For the planets, I really had to think about what colors I wanted to use for them. I used the colors of purple, pink and several blues. After doing quite a bit of color testing, these colors just really seemed to go together as calm colors!

For clouds, I knew that I didn’t want to make clusters of circles like some people do. So, after going through the different types of brushes I had access to, I know for fact that I found the perfect one to make my clouds. I made sure to make my clouds multiple blended colors in each cloud. I think they look beautiful.

For the background, I knew that I wanted to do something simple but still eye catching. So, I went through a couple different colors and I picked light blue because it looked the best!

While doing this project, I learned how to control the different brushes in Procreate, for example how big or small the brushes needed to be while I created. I also learned what colors complement each other.
