I chose to create this project because I actually create my own book covers and fan drawings in my own free time, so I thought that this would be fun. I settled on the book Kill Order because it is part of a series I very much enjoy and it was the book I had just finished.
The Program I used to create my book cover is Procreate.
First: I chose the book cover I wanted. I started brainstorming and thinking about the central idea of the book. I thought deeply about what I wanted to have the book cover focus on, and I discussed my ideas with my brother who also has read the book. I finally settled on a good design for my cover.
Next: I started my rough sketch in Procreate by placing the main objects and characters that build up the cover. I set them all up until it looked exactly how I wanted it to look.
Then: I started drawing over the rough sketch. For the people, I took a picture of myself in the poses they were in and worked off that so the people in the picture would look more realistic. For the other elements like trees and fire, I used a reference image to draw. This helped me make sure everything was scaled the way I wanted it.
Last: I added all the finishing touches to the drawing by adding the title of the book and the author's name. I adjusted the light to fit the mood of the book and the book cover, and I added a final filter to make it look like a real book cover.
While making this book cover, I learned that planning ahead and thinking about what you want to create before you begin helps a lot.
