A small quasi-variation on the celesta motif from “Hermione and Harry” opens this final scene. The two of them stand at the edge of the Astronomy Tower, where Harry last saw Dumbledore alive, pondering the events that have taken place and what will...

Low strings enter quietly back at Hogwarts, and shivering triplets alternate in thirds over Borgin & Burkes far away as the Death Eaters arrive. Over a shot of the sky, choir enters. The music remains ominous over the many shots of different characters. There...

Violent orchestral pulses begin the moment an arm grabs Harry from the water. Aleatoricism runs rampant across all sections of the orchestra, trying to make sense of the horror that is now coming from the lake. With a big orchestral flourish, Harry casts...

A gentle Fawkes theme opens this cue in the strings. Dumbledore and Harry’s relationship has grown tremendously until this point, and a moment of simplicity is needed given the darker tones that their scenes usually entail. The Family theme is...

The string section enters quietly and delicately underneath Slughorn’s mention of Lily. A solo oboe enters with the Family Theme. This is a quote of the distressed version that appeared in the graveyard scene of Goblet of Fire (2019). The 3-Note motif begins...

A mischievous trill opens this cue on the shot of the Felix Felicis vial. The repurposed Sorcerer's Stone quote that introduced this potion earlier in the film is reprised here, as...

Despite the obvious comedy surrounding this scene, it worked well to score it from Hagrid’s perspective to give it some emotional honesty. Sad strings play a lament of...

Cellos play a few notes decorated by harp to frame the opening of this cue. The harp then takes over, beginning to slowly outline chords. A melody unfolds on top of the texture in unison celesta, piano, and vibraphone. The theme is reminiscent of other...

Ron and Hermione’s theme opens this cue delicately in the flute. The harp ascends into a light orchestrated statement, then settles at the transition to the stairwells...

The moment Malfoy realizes what Harry knows, the strings enter. Harry goes after him; a snare drum launches the orchestra into repetitive movement. The winds and...

Clarinets playfully enter with Double Trouble, which serves to represent the teenage shenanigans at this point. Ron’s theme takes over in the english horn while Harry waits outside Slughorn’s door. After much hesitation, he finally lets the two into his office...

Strings enter quietly under the end of a trivial scene between the teens in the hallway, and a slight Ron theme is played in the flute as Harry walks away from the situation...

This short cue utilizes the 3-note motif again while Harry attempts to ask Slughorn about his old discussion about Horcruxes. Strings enter with choir before the cue...

Celesta enters with mysterious chordal outlines as Harry and Mr. Weasley discuss the Vanishing Cabinet. Malfoy’s theme does not make an appearance since he is not...

Dissonant strings enter, and rhythmic drums return from the previous cue, propelling the action forward again. The main motif from the Werewolf Scene (Prisoner of Azkaban...

Strings enter quietly at both ends of the orchestra, and the middle sections accompanied by celesta move around while slowing down the rhythm. On the scene change, it is Christmas Day at the Burrow, and many old friends have gathered for as...

Pizzicato strings accompany Hermione hiding in order to evade Cormac McLaggen. Harry notices and walks over to see what sort of teenage drama is unfolding. In the...

Ominous cellos and basses slither in underneath Snape’s dialogue. Horns and upper strings join in as he walks away. Wandering english horn and harp maneuver the...

Solo harp delicately plays, examining Hermione’s internal state despite the party going on around her. Strings quietly enter and hold long notes as to not disturb the...

Malfoy’s theme appears in 3/4 time when the camera sees him in the corner. As he walks to the Room of Requirement, modified harp arpeggios accompanied by high...

Dissonant strings fade in under the conversation. Chords move around with bell tolls in the celesta, creating an uncertain and dark atmosphere. The 3-note motif enters at...

An orchestral sparkle shows the viewer’s ears what the eyes can see as Harry sneaks something into his pocket. Flute and horn triads playfully descend over the realization...

Choir begins the cue observing the cursed necklace with an open fifth and tonal melodic motion. It is contrasted with the harp and percussion rolling dissonant chords...

A Prisoner of Azkaban-style statement of Malfoy’s theme opens this cue, chosen due to the visual of the Marauder's Map. There is a quick transition from Harry’s bedside to...

A playful Trio theme opens this cue as they share a lighter moment together. The end of the statement breaks off the legato, finishing with two short chords, then leads into...

On their way back from the Hog’s Head, the trio share a moment of happy stumbling up the path. A continuation of the harpsichord instrumentation plays in a small...

A classic statement of Nimbus 2000 flies into our ears as the quidditch tryouts begin; this is a quote from a very early statement used in the reptile house at the beginning of Sorcerer’s Stone. It is a rare moment in this film so late in the series to portray...

This short cue introduces the first full statement of Draco’s Task. Celesta plays through the entire melody as he makes his way to a familiar location: the Room of Requirement. A key change emphasized by a low...

The string section ascends as all of the girls get closer and closer to the cauldron containing the love potion. Once they begin retreating slowly, woodwinds take over...

The 3-note motif appears appropriately over the opening shot of the next scene, which depicts the destroyed diary of Tom Riddle. This object and motif share a...

A classic statement of Hedwig’s Theme plays over the reveal of the great hall, emphasizing yet another shot-for-shot callback David Yates utilized in this film. Musically it is in a lower key...

The tone of the story shifts quite a lot in this film. There is a clear attitude of wanting to continue the school year as normally as possible despite the times, and the music reflects the students’ will...

Percussion instruments sparkle over a low bassline during the opening shot of this scene. The distorted image of the train compartment is enhanced in a playful way, creating mystery and a little suspense before the tension is quickly lifted. Luna is...

A slow, distant memory of Harry’s first time in Ollivander’s crosses the mind of the orchestra in the form of a lonely few notes on the celesta. Flute takes over, then moves...

The Chamber of Secrets variation of Hedwig’s Theme gets its first statement since the second film over the shot of the Hogwarts Express making its way across the...

The trio theme has its first appearance in this score, providing an emotional underpinning to Harry, Ron, and Hermione having a laugh and being reunited. This statement, now lower in pitch...

A quick, excited pulse begins this cue as the camera flows up towards Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Fred and George have not been seen in the story since their grand exit towards the end of Order...

Some very quick harmonic framework plays over Harry seeing Ginny up in her window as he approaches the Burrow. There is not much time for material regarding the two of them in this film, though it does present itself when appropriate: in terms of...

An extended variation of material from “Hermione’s Feather” opens this cue to represent the spell Dumbledore uses to clean up Slughorn’s house. The very end includes some musical choreography showing the last crystal on the chandelier...

Harry senses something going on outside, and walks towards the window of the cafe. “Sneaking Around” is given a reprise here, and it continues in the same way as the opening of Sorcerer’s Stone. The reason is made clear after a train whizzes by, revealing...

Over the Warner Brothers logo, a new theme opens the score. This is the "Call of the Prince,” which will come to represent the mysteriously marked-up potions book, and its equally mysterious editor, that Harry will come across in this film. The second theme...
