Cue No. 50

"The Forest Again

50 - The Forest Again.mov

The music from the end of Half-Blood Prince (2021) begins this cue, with the falling chords that played under the trio’s promise to stick together. Now, at the end, Harry is realizing that Hermione and Ron cannot come with him on this final journey. The family theme enters, and Hermione hugs Harry for the final time. The music continues to reveal itself as a quote of the end of Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) where Hermione first sent Harry off to face Voldemort.

The quote continues into the pulsing music that accompanied Harry down to the mirror room in his first year. This time, distant choir is added over top, but it fades away as he enters the Dark Forest. A common motif, usually associated with death or loss in this film, plays softly as he looks back one last time. The strings pause as he then pulls out the Golden Snitch. Harry realizes his death has come, and then presses his mouth to the words on the little golden ball. Tremolo strings wait for something to happen. They build, then reveal the Deathly Hallows theme as the Resurrection Stone appears from inside the Snitch. Harry holds it and closes his eyes. The key changes.

When Harry opens his eyes, a reprise of the mirror scene from Sorcerer’s Stone plays. Lily and James are there, along with Sirius and Lupin. A reprisal of "Sirius and Harry" begins after the mirror scene quote, bringing back memories from Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and what could have been if Sirius had not been hunted by the Ministry. Window to the Past plays as they talk, followed by the Order of the Phoenix B Theme when Lupin comforts Harry. A note holds under James’ line, “Until the end."

One more Window to the Past gently ends the melancholy moment, and a final celesta solo closes the scene as Harry drops the Resurrection Stone, never to be found again.

Low strings take over on the shot of Voldemort from behind. Voldemort 2 plays in the woodwinds as he waits. The Death Eater Theme and Bellatrix’s motif weave in and out of the texture, and are cut off by Voldemort 1 as he turns to her.

A note holds before Voldemort turns back around to see Harry walking towards him. On the camera shot revealing Harry, the 3-note climbs slowly as the strings crescendo. Harry, the unintended Horcrux, has come to be destroyed. The build intensifies until Voldemort speaks. As he prepares to murder Harry, the 3-note re-enters the texture, but a slow version of the Horcrux in Danger material plays simultaneously, seemingly trying to warn Voldemort that he is about to destroy part of his own soul as well.
