"Sectumsempra"

Cue No. 33 - Sectumsempra.mp4

The moment Malfoy realizes what Harry knows, the strings enter. Harry goes after him; a snare drum launches the orchestra into repetitive movement. The winds and percussion decorate as it builds and culminates in Malfoy having a panic attack in the bathroom. Low strings wander as he wonders what to do, then his theme plays in the horn, darker than it has ever been. The horn section becomes muted and plays the Death Eater theme on Harry’s entrance.

The fight that follows is choreographed in the orchestra. A pause comes quickly, and the cellos and basses play rhythmic hesitations under dissonant long brass notes. A massive outburst precedes Harry’s use of Sectumsempra, with high strings, piercing woodwinds, and low strings creating a wall of sound. Harry has no idea what the spell does, and after Malfoy falls backwards, he looks afraid to find out. Choir enters while Harry rounds the corner to see Malfoy on the floor bleeding. The music turns into a lament until Snape’s entrance.

As Snape heals Malfoy, the Call of the Prince plays mysteriously, representing the reason these characters found themselves here. Back in the common room, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny are standing around quietly and taking in what happened. High strings are quietly answered by the low as the cue fades out.
