"The Pensieve"

Cue No. 29 - The Pensieve.mp4

While Harry waits around in Dumbledore’s office, familiar music plays as he wanders. This was used in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) for the exact same situation. When Harry grabs the licorice snaps, a playful scherzando section begins, emulating the type of mischief aurally described in a score like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). Hedwig’s theme plays as a mysterious magical object glides out of a side-cupboard towards Harry, emphasizing that there are still unknown things in the magical world he has yet to discover.

The Pensieve motif, which has not been heard since we saw Dumbledore place a memory in it back in Cue No. 12: Teacher Discussion, plays as Harry observes the pool of memories. The key changes abruptly as he falls in, and he lands with a thud next to a past version of Dumbledore. A small moment of mickey-mousing takes place as the wizard sitting next to Dumbledore shakes hands with him by sticking his arm right through Harry.

The Death Eater theme receives a full statement as Igor Karkaroff’s interrogation begins. After the entire theme plays, the violas motivically take it downwards to the bottom of the orchestra. The low brass throb in suspicion of the entire situation unfolding. Rita Skeeter is present, and her theme gets a quick and sinister nod. The brass move upwards as Karkaroff pleads with Crouch Sr. regarding his release from Azkaban. Strings move around as the good guys argue about the interrogation and what Karkaroff said.

When Karkaroff announces he has one more name, Voldemort 1 enters the texture, insinuating that there is more to this scheme than just a simple release from Azkaban. The Plotting motif plays as Crouch Jr. stands and begins walking away. As his name is called by Karkaroff, part of Rita’s theme screams out as she is in shock at that scandal that has just broken in the room. The throbbing in the low and middle brass is now up in the high woodwinds, screaming in horror at the situation. The Plotting motif gains ground as Crouch Jr. is brought before his father. As the plot thickens, the Three-note motif shows itself as the true puppet master behind these evil schemes, and Harry is then thrown out of the Pensieve along with eerie accompaniment excerpted from the Chamber of Secrets (2002).
