"Kreacher’s Tale and Magic is Might"

DH 11 - Kreacher's Tale and Magic is Might.mp4

Harry is having another vision, this time of Voldemort interrogating Ollivander about his wand. A slippery 3-Note motif plays in the strings, followed by a firm and terrifying one in the horns. Harry wakes up suddenly with only the choir holding over from his vision, singing a distant 3-Note motif. Celesta plays an improvisatory flourish over the end of the motif as the vision fades quickly from Harry's mind.

Ron and Hermione's theme plays with gentle warmth on the shot of their hands almost together, as they sleep on the couch and the floor. Harry gets up to look around the home of his former godfather. A reprisal of the distorted Harry's Wondrous World motif heard in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2020) appears while he once again ascends the stairs at Grimmauld Place, unsure of what he'll find at the top.

Harry arrives at Sirius' old bedroom. A Window to the Past plays nostalgically in the english horn. Strings continue the theme over a pedal cello and bass as Harry explores the room. The violins stop the melody and hold when Harry gets to Bathilda Bagshot's book, recognizing her name and potential importance from the wedding. The low strings then answer the violins by holding a note after Hermione calls for Harry. Outside, she and Ron are standing at Sirius' brother's door. The name on it is Regulus Arcturus Black: RAB. The distant RAB motif plays as the trio has finally connected the dots.

When they sit downstairs, ominous strings move around as they discuss their next move. A small 3-note appears in the alto flute to re-emphasize that the locket they are looking for is a Horcrux. Another hold in the strings puts a pause on the music after they hear a thump in the cupboard nearby. The strings slowly build, and an oboe provides some quirky curiosity. Trills add to the anxious texture, and Kreacher is suddenly revealed to the trio when Harry opens the door.

Low strings move around uncomfortably. The trio demands explanations from Kreacher. Staggered string entrances on the same material slowly build as Harry narrows in on an answer regarding the location of the real locket. Chords begin to throb and then crescendo, before Kreacher leaves to find Mundungus Fletcher.

Far off to the north, a familiar scarlet steam engine is on its way to Hogwarts, carrying many familiar faces (save for the three most important). A big Death Eater theme is played by the horn section, accompanied by strings that chug along, providing an aggressive harmonic and motoric backdrop. Inside the train, the music pulses with added dissonances on almost every beat. The Death Eaters are looking for Harry. Neville stands up and bravely tells them off, saying Harry is not there. His theme gets a small reprise over the insistent pulsing.

Inside the Ministry of Magic, its theme plays several times in different keys while a montage of footage shows us that the takeover was quick and brutal. This builds to a quasi-tutti moment on the reveal of the "Magic is Might" monument, which replaces the old fountain and looms over the atrium. The thumping continues in the orchestra underneath another couple Ministry themes. Muted horns announce the return of Dolores Umbridge, then the montage cuts to Diagon Alley - Mundungus Fletcher is fading into an alleyway so as to hide from unfriendly Death Eaters searching for him. The music maintains the throbs, but with insistent bouncing violas and slow changing chords in the strings above, before ending up back at Grimmauld Place.
