Cue No. 18

"Ron’s Departure"

DH 18 - Ron's Departure.mp4

The string section dominates the opening of this cue, reminiscent of the opening of the film when we saw the trio in their separate lives, waiting to be reunited. Here, we see the trio fractured and about to fall apart. A stressed Ron and Hermione theme plays in the strings. It continues to a halt. Harry hears Ron apparate outside, and Hermione's pleas for him to say come to a sharp silence.

High strings and a solo oboe, followed by a solo clarinet, add new colors to the cue as Hermione stands outside the tent the next morning, hoping that Ron will return. His theme plays, but it is only partial, and does not bring him back. When it becomes clear to Hermione that he will not return, she ties her scarf to a nearby tree before apparating with Harry.

The music stops at the moment they apparate instead of turning violent and aleatoric as it would normally. This is not only to keep the mood of the scene consistent, but to show that even the whimsicality of magic is losing its wonder in dark times like these.

Once in their new location, the falling chords from the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2021) play, evoking the promise they made at the end of the film to be together in this until the end, and to show that it may be one of the thoughts Hermione is thinking as she begins to cry. The mission continues, though, and Harry stands atop a cliff, looking into the sunset. The flute plays a small Hedwig's Theme to re-focus our hero, no matter how reluctant he is.
